THE regeneration of a piece of derelict land in Billingham got under way yesterday.

It is hoped the land adjacent to the town's Roscoe Road will eventually be turned into a nature area for residents.

A large scale clean-up operation started yesterday with help from Tees Valley Housing Group, Tees Valley Wildlife Trust, Johnson Matthey Catalysts and the residents of Billingham.

A number of local volunteers picked up litter and helped to cut back vegetation on the land.

They included three-year-old Demi-Leigh Taylor and Owen Murray, four, who are pictured left helping out.

Overgrown shrubs were cut back and pathways also created.

Deborah Stephenson, head of community investment at Tees Valley Housing Group, said: "As owners of the land, we feel it's our duty to transform it into a place that residents can be proud of.

"Hopefully we will be able to turn it into a kind of nature park with a children's play area and a nature trail for people to walk their dogs.

"Our aim is to make the area more appealing to existing residents and by doing so, hopefully attract more people to come and live here."
