RESIDENTS who have spent three decades extending a hand of friendship to their European neighbours are holding a celebration.

The Derwentside-Werdohl Friendship Club was formed in April 1975, after the north Durham district was twinned with Werdohl, in north-west Germany. At least two exchange visits a year have been held ever since and more than 1,500 people have travelled since the first trip in 1976.

Organisers are trying to find as many former members as possible ahead of a trip next year to mark the club's 30th anniversary.

Graham Jordan, club chairman, said: "We'd love to see as many people as possible who have been involved with the Friendship Club - or who might fancy visiting Germany - to come along, bringing their families and maybe their old photographs as well. I first got involved 15 years ago, and I've always been bowled over by the warmth of the friendships that have been formed."

The Derwentside group plans to fly to Germany in the May half-term, with a German party making a return trip in July, to coincide with the Tall Ships race in Newcastle and Gateshead.

The social evening is on Wednesday, November 10, in the Masonic Hall, Front Street, Stanley.
