WORK is due to start on the strengthening of two pedestrian bridges over the A1(M) today.

The bridges are at the Washington motorway service area and at Portobello to the north of the service area.

The work is required to strengthen the bridge supports to bring them up to standards to withstand vehicle impact.

While the work is taking place, pedestrian access across the bridges will be maintained, although for safety reasons there may need to be temporary closures.

Three lanes of traffic will be maintained through this section of the road during the daytime, but there may occasionally be a need for nighttime lane closures on the A1(M) and A195 for safety reasons.

A 50mph speed limit will be in place during the works and vehicles more than 6ft 6in wide will be restricted to certain lanes.

Traffic management will remain in place 24-hours a day, with work expected to be completed by April.
