A MATCHmaking scheme for employers and graduates is proving a success.
A total of 20 graduates have found work directly relating to their degrees through the initiative, run by Askham Bryan College and organisations including the University of York. The scheme offers graduates a 20-week placement to develop their business skills and gain experience in a commercial environment.
Nominal pay is given and there is the possibility of a full-time position at the end of the placement.
Danielle Davis, 23, was given a placement with Rural Arts North Yorkshire in Thirsk after finishing a BA Honours in graphic design.
Over the summer, she has worked on a wide range of projects. At present, she is producing three giant puppets as part of a community project with three Whitby schools. The puppets are on display in the town's library.
"This has definitely helped launch my career," said Miss Davis. "At university, you get the academic aspect, but this has given me first-hand experience of the practical side of working."
The scheme is funded by the European Social Fund and the Learning and Skills Council North Yorkshire.
There are still placements available for graduates in North Yorkshire. Applicants must have graduated within the last five years and want to work within the county. For details, call Sue Shooter on (01904) 634748.
