HAIRDRESSERS in Darlington raised about £1,000 for charity when they donned Halloween costumes and worked for free yesterday.

Stylists from Toni and Guy dressed up as a devil, a witch and her cat to raise awareness of breast cancer.

The idea came after a friend lost her hair while undergoing chemotherapy to battle the disease.

Style director Mike Pallister said: "One minute she was fine, the next she had found a lump. It's a horrible disease and you just don't know when it is going to strike. Chemotherapy often leads to hair loss so as hairdressers we are particularly conscious of the trauma this can cause.

"Breast cancer is something all the girls at the salon feel very strongly about and there has been a great response to the charity event."

The event is one of several being planned by the salon. Franchisee Amber McKay is also seeking sponsorship to walk part of the Great Wall of China next year with proceeds going to Breast Cancer Care.
