A COUNCIL has received a national award for its work on improving facilities for cyclists.
Durham County Council has been presented the accolade of most improved authority in the North-East by the All-Party Parliamentary Cycling Group.
To achieve the award, the council's approach to the development of cycling initiatives has been subject to intense scrutiny by the English Regional Cycling Development Team during the past two years.
Several issues were taken into account, including the council's commitment, development of infrastructure, promotion and stakeholder engagement.
A spokesperson for the judges said that although many local authorities had improved their commitment to cycling in the past year, several, including Durham County Council, stood out, and had significantly improved their provision for cyclists.
Chris Tunstall, deputy chief executive of the council and director of environment, said: "Last year's assessment was particularly disappointing for us, as it was for most other authorities, and made us realise that much work needed to be done to raise the profile of cycling in the region.
"We have now been judged to be the most improved authority in the North-East and are delighted that the efforts of everyone involved have been recognised.''
