DELIGHTED children were greeted by the smiling face of Thomas the Tank Engine at the weekend.
The engine pulled thousands of passengers along the revived Wensleydale Railway during a special visit by the famous engine. The journeys between Redmire and Leeming Bar were the first on the line by a steam engine for 37 years, rail enthusiasts believe.
Christopher Awdry, for whom the Thomas stories were written by his father the Rev William Awdry, was on hand to meet passengers and sign copies of his own railway books.
Wensleydale Railway marketing director Ruth Annison said: "There was a lovely spirit over the two days."
