AN animal welfare charity is hoping to find homes for abandoned dogs before Christmas.
The Durham branch of the RSPCA rents space at Deerness Kennels, in Langley Moor, and has nine dogs in its care.
Kevin Forsyth, who runs the kennels, said some of the animals had been there for 11 weeks.
"We have got Alfie, who is a white and tan terrier cross, is about 18 months and is very lively.
"There is Star, who is a real star, a Schitzu cross, who is a really character and would make an extremely good pet for the right person.''
Mr Forsyth said that he expected an increase in arrivals at the kennels from now until after Christmas.
Some of the animals might have run away after being frightened by the noise of fireworks, he said.
"As they are RSPCA dogs they are fully vaccinated, they will be micro-chipped and there is help with neutering.
"Our staff will only be too pleased to show people the dogs.
"They can come as a family and walk a dog.
"Some dogs tend to stick. People view them and go elsewhere and see a dog they like better.
"It is all about the chemistry between the dog and a potential new owner.''
Further information about the dogs available for rehoming can be obtained by contacting the kennels on 0191-378 0439.
