ONE NorthEast chairman Margaret Fay was honoured by The Princess Royal yesterday for her services to broadcasting.
She received her OBE at Buckingham Palace along with a host of other recipients named in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in June.
Ms Fay began her career with Tyne Tees Television in 1981 in the company's finance department, quickly rising through the ranks to eventually take over as managing director and general manager in 1997.
In July last year, she was appointed chairman of One NorthEast, succeeding Dr John Bridge.
She said: "I could never have believed when I started as a clerk at Tyne Tees nearly 25 years ago that I would receive such an honour.
"I count myself lucky to have been able to pursue my career in the North-East and to have worked with so many talented people who helped me get to the top at Tyne Tees.
"They have played a big part in my award, which I will treasure. I was also incredibly proud to have my family standing beside me today."
Born and raised in South Tyneside, Ms Fay, 55, still lives in the borough and has spent all of her working life in the North-East.
Alan Clarke, chief executive of One NorthEast, said: "Margaret's OBE is thoroughly deserved and the story of her rise to the top in the region is an inspiration for all those starting out in their careers in the North-East.
"She has brought a wealth of talent and experience to One NorthEast, built up during her broadcasting career, but she retains the human touch and a real passion for the North-East, which comes across to everyone she meets."
