A TOTAL of 1,000 footballs are being handed out to youngsters to promote healthy living and team-building.
The footballs are being distributed to schools and community groups across east Durham, with the first given to pupils at Wingate Junior School this week.
Geoff Lodge, of the District of Easington Community Safety Partnership, started the ball rolling by handing over the first consignment to headteacher Granville Long.
Mr Lodge said: "We are pleased to be able to provide free footballs for young people.
"It fits well with our aim of encouraging and supporting young people to become involved in positive team-building activities. The footballs are also a good way to raise the profile of the Community Safety Partnership among the young people of the district."
Mr Long said: "The young people are very keen footballers and these footballs will be a welcome addition to school resources."
Footballs will be given to the 49 primary and secondary schools in the district.
