DAVID BECKHAM is to star in a new blockbuster movie set in the North-East.
The England skipper says he wants his cameo role in soccer movie Goal! to be an inspiration to children around the world.
The football heart-throb will star alongside Real Madrid team-mates Zinedine Zidane and Raul.
The £54m trilogy will follow the fortunes of a young Latin American soccer star.
Producer Mike Jefferies had hoped to land a major name - but ended up with three of the biggest stars in the world.
Beckham said he was delighted to be involved.
He said: "It's no secret that I want to be involved in youth coaching when I finally hang up my boots, and I believe that the Goal! trilogy will provide a positive message to kids around the world."
The first movie is set in Newcastle and filming started earlier this year in the city and at Newcastle United's St James's Park.
The film, produced by Milkshake Films and Mel Gibson's Icon Productions, stars Diego Luna as a young soccer hopeful who comes from Los Angeles to play for Newcastle United before transferring to Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Producer Mr Jefferies said "We could not be more delighted to have signed these three Galacticos.
"Their inclusion will bring a huge amount of kudos, authenticity and excitement to the project."
Newcastle was chosen as the setting last year, and initial footage was shot at the end of last season, with cameras tailing the Newcastle United team in the UK and Europe. Stars such as Alan Shearer appeared, while Mexican actor Diego Luna was introduced to the St James's Park faithful.
Filming is due to begin this month in locations in Newcastle, London, Los Angeles and Mexico. The film is due for release in August.
