POPPY sellers have called on City of York Council to allow more days for street collections.
The Royal British Legion has permission to sell poppies on the streets for four days leading up to Remembrance Sunday.
Margaret Pottage, who was a poppy seller in London for 30 years before she moved to Stamford Bridge, said the Royal British Legion cause is not as strong in northern England as it is in the south.
She said: "This may well be due to the fact that certain bodies such as City of York Council restrict the number of days when poppy sellers can actively collect on the streets of York."
Sandra Gregory of Acomb, has been a poppy seller for 20 years and was upset that she was not allowed to begin poppy appeal collecting on Saturday at the start of Remembrance Week.
"I am almost in tears," she said. "I think it's disgraceful."
A council spokeswoman said the number of collecting days were limited to avoid more than one charity collecting at any one time and the Royal British Legion had only applied for the dates the council agreed upon.
She said: "Although on-street poppy sellers will only be able to operate for four days, many shops sell poppies and stock them for a few weeks before Remembrance Sunday."
