A PARK was opened yesterday with a blaze of colour.

Mosaics were unveiled, flower bulbs planted by children and people dressed up as bugs and trees to shower Carter Park, Middlesbrough, with colour and mark its opening.

The bulbs were planted as part of a community day organised by West Middlesbrough Trust (WMNT) and will blossom in the spring.

Councillor David Budd, a WMNT board member and Middlesbrough Council executive member for economic regeneration, performed the ceremony.

The community day also saw a preview of two mosaics featuring designs by children, who spent more than ten hours working on the theme with artist Mike Gray.

The mosaics will soon be installed to complete a wall, which already has seven others depicting scenes from the area.

Joan Ford, chairman of WMNT said: "This project is a great example of how a community can play the leading role in improving the local environment.

"Younger and older residents from West Lane have been involved in the development of Carter Park from day one. We are delighted to see the park officially opened in such a lovely way, with young people being involved once again."

Carter Park is one of a number of projects and initiatives from WMNT to improve the environment in West Middlesbrough.
