THE safety of teenage girls and drug abuse are the main worries for young people in an area of North Yorkshire.

The discovery was made in a survey in Ryedale aimed at improving quality of life.

While the concerns have been raised in the district, which covers scores of villages and several market towns, Ryedale is one of the safest places to live in Britain according to community safety officer Terry Triffitt.

The latest figures show that the number of violent crimes is eight per 1,000 residents compared with the national average of 21, while just £3,000 worth of drugs, mostly cannabis, had been involved in offences in the past year.

"Ryedale people have a less than one per cent chance of being burgled," assured PC Triffitt.
