FANS of the humble British banger have helped a North-East butcher achieve record sales.
H Coates and Son, which has shops Framwellgate Moor, Coxhoe and Trimdon, in County Durham, sold 1.5 tonnes of sausages during British Sausage Appreciation Week - a total of 22,000 bangers.
The sales figures are good news for charity - the chain promised to donate 10p for every 1lb sold to St Cuthbert's Hospice in Durham.
The total of £260 was rounded up to £300.
During the week, the shops also offered free sausage tasting and volunteer fundraisers from St Cuthbert's set up stalls in all three outlets, selling merchandise such as Christmas cards, calendars, teddy bears and key rings. This provided the charity with a further £1,150.
Butcher Harry Coates said: "The event allowed our customers to join us in celebrating the very best of British sausages, while also raising valuable funds for such a worthwhile local charity."
