SOCCER star Alan Shearer is backing train operator GNER's attempt to retain the East Coast Main Line franchise.
The England football legend and Newcastle captain signed GNER's online petition during a visit to Newcastle Central station.
The company, which wants to secure the right to run the franchise for ten years, is asking passengers to register support at www.gner.co.uk/bid or by texting Bid to 80216.
The other contenders for the franchise are Danish Railways, a Virgin/Stagecoach consortium, and FirstGroup, which runs ScotRail, Trans-Pennine Express and Hull Trains.
Shearer said: "I travel with GNER a lot and enjoy the excellent service. I hope it can continue to serve the North-East for many years to come."
GNER spokesman Alan Hyde said: "We are delighted that Alan has kicked off the public phase of our re-election campaign and has given us his public backing."
GNER's franchise expires at the end of April. The Strategic Rail Authority is expected to announce a preferred bidder for the new InterCity East Coast franchise in February.
