PLANS to demolish the former Warsett School in Brotton and redevelop the site for the Freeborough College will be discussed by Redcar and Cleveland Council's planning committee on Thursday.

The outline proposal involves a four-storey building. The detailed design will be the subject of a further application.

Five people have objected to the plans, voicing concern that the building is too high, that additional traffic would be created, and that proposed parking areas are too close to housing.

A report to the meeting says: "The principle of developing at this height needs to be established prior to further detailed design work being carried out.

"The proposed development will utilise existing roads, although buses will be encouraged to use Coach Road and Laburnum Road.

"The Transport Assessment submitted with the planning application concludes that whilst the increase at peak times will be significant, it is considered the junctions can cater for the additional traffic.

"The use of coaches to transport pupils to the site and an effective travel plan will go a long way in reducing traffic impact."

The committee is recommended to approve the application before referring it to the Government Office North-East for consideration.
