STUDENT Martin Busby received special praise during a college awards night - after it was revealed he helped foil an intruder.
The Darlington College of Technology catering student came to the aid of a member of staff after she spotted a thief stealing her purse.
Tutor Clare Mitchell and Martin, who the previous day had been on crutches, ran the length of the college with several other students in pursuit of the thief, who they finally cornered.
"It was quite a day," said Martin, 20, of Darlington, who has Asperger's syndrome and learning difficulties.
"It was my birthday, I'd just heard that I had passed my course and then this happened."
Mrs Mitchell said: "He was a great support. He gave chase with me and checked I was okay after the experience, so I think he deserves a special mention."
Martin was at Darlington Civic Theatre on Monday night to receive the Sheila Flook Memorial Award for his work at the college and for overcoming his learning difficulties.
His accolade was among almost 200 handed out to students and staff.
Principal Sarah Farley said: "It makes all the hard work well worthwhile from both a student and staff perspective when we celebrate the outstanding achievements we have seen this year."
