THE future of Clyde Wijnhard took another positive twist last night after the Dutch striker told manager David Hodgson he would like to stay at Darlington.
Hodgson admitted on Monday that Wijnhard may have played his last game for the club, with Yorkshire rivals Bradford City and Rotherham United both vying for his signature.
However, the Quakers boss was holding further talks with the player's agent last night, after Wijnhard's latest admission.
Wijnhard has been offered an improved deal to remain at the Williamson Motors Stadium after scoring four goals in six appearances for Quakers. The 31-year-old has been appearing on a pay-as-you-play basis.
"I've spoken to Clyde and he has made it quite clear that he would like to stay with us," said Hodgson.
"Obviously, there is still a lot to discuss but the signs are looking better than before.
"We will be having further talks over the next few days and hopefully we can agree something before the weekend."
Quakers entertain Yeovil Town in the first round of the FA Cup on Saturday and Hodgson added: "Who knows, we may be unveiling a new signing (Wijnhard) before the crowd this weekend."
Hodgson will also welcome back skipper Craig Liddle and midfielder Stephen Thomas on Saturday. Liddle has recovered from a leg problem and will play some part, while Thomas will return to the squad after a three-match absence with a hernia.
Curtis Fleming will return to action in a fortnight. The former Middlesbrough defender has not played since sustaining a knee injury in September.
The 36-year-old returned to the North-East with Quakers during the summer after turning down a one-year contract extension at Crystal Palace.
"You're always hoping to make a good start when you join a new club, so it has been frustrating," admitted Fleming.
"But there's still a long way to go in the season so I have got plenty of time on my side."
