VANDALS have caused hundreds of pounds of damage to a Darlington art gallery.

Staff at Gallerina, in Duke Street, arrived at work on Saturday morning to find eight newly-installed outside lamps smashed and decking destroyed.

The destruction had also caused the loss of power in part of the building.

Assistant Gwen Brown said: "We like to make an effort with the frontage and with it coming up to Christmas we have just had a lot of flood lighting installed. We haven't even paid for this yet or got the job finished and it's vandalised.

"It's just mindless."

The incident is believed to have happened at about 8.30pm on Friday. Anyone with information can call Darlington police on (01325) 467681.
