SHOPPERS could be forgiven for thinking they had wandered into the wrong country when the traffic took on a decidedly Gallic look at the weekend.

The Citroen 2CV has for years been an icon of the culture across the Channel, as French as baguettes, garlic, frog's legs or snails.

But on Saturday it was the very Yorkshire town of Knaresborough that found itself playing host to a troop of the go-anywhere cars - complete with drivers in traditional French costume.

Town crier Nancy Buckle was there to welcome the visitors together with members of the town's Chamber of Trade and Commerce.

And the bells of Holy Trinity Church also rang out to welcome the travellers from the Continent.

The 2CVs were actually the first of two French representations and were promoting what will be the second.

On Sunday, December 5 about 20 food producers from France will arrive in the town square to sell their wares from an 80-metre long display of stalls.
