A post mortem examination is being carried out today following the discovery of a man's body near Durham City yesterday.

The body of a man in his mid 40s was discovered late on Sunday afternoon in the kitchen of a house in The Grove, Coxhoe.

Police said the man, who lived alone, appeared to have been dead for some time.

A Durham Police spokesman said: "At this stage, investigators are keeping an open mind on how the man met his death.

"It would be wrong to jump to any conclusions. The results of the post mortem will determine the direction of any future inquiry."
