A 34-year-old soldier has been found dead at an Army barracks, police said today.
The Lance Corporal in the Prince of Wales's Own Regiment was discovered hanging in a store room in the Somme Barracks, at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, yesterday.
North Yorkshire Police said they had launched an investigation into the incident, which they are treating as an unexplained death.
A force spokesman said: ''At 9.40am on Wednesday police were called to the Somme Barracks at Catterick Garrison, where a 34-year-old man had been found dead in a store room.
''The man who was found hanging was a Lance Corporal in the Prince of Wales's Own Regiment.
''North Yorkshire Police are investigating the incident, which is being treated as an unexplained death.
''A post mortem examination confirmed the cause of death was hanging.''
The huge Catterick Garrison, near Richmond, has been the focus of concerns about the number of young soldiers who have died there in recent years.
In June, Andrew John Browne, a 24-year-old trainee Coldstream Guard, was found dead with a single gunshot wound at the base.
Some families have joined those campaigning for a public inquiry into deaths at Deepcut Barracks, in Surrey.
