VICTORIOUS No campaigners handed over their winnings to charity after staking a £2,000 bet on the outcome of this month's referendum on a directly-elected assembly for the North-East.

North East No campaigners Neil Herron and Colin Moran yesterday visited the Stepney Bank Stables, in Byker, Newcastle, to hand part of the money they collected from bookies Ladbrokes.

The money will be used to support the stables' youth project, which provides riding for inner city children.

The rest of the money will go to Grace House Appeal, in Sunderland, a dedicated hospice for children.

Mr Herron said: "Stepney Bank Stables and manager Susan Tron are an inspiration. They have a fantastic operation in what is now an improving inner city area and demonstrate a 'can do' attitude second to none."
