TWO North-East cities laun-ched their Christmas celebrations last night with the help of football personalities.

Former Newcastle United manager Sir Bobby Robson switched on Newcastle's lights in Grey Street, with The Newcastle Vipers ice hockey team giving away tickets.

Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy led the honours in Sunderland outside the civic centre, in Burdon Road.

Mr McCarthy said: "It is great to be part of such a popular event in a city renowned for its warm and friendly people with a passion for football."

The swich-on marked the start of a series of festive events in Sunderland. An open-air ice rink in Mowbray Park will open on Thursday, and a German market will be held in the Market Square from November 29 to December 19.

Sunderland Empire will re-open on December 9 after a £4.5m refurbishment.
