STAFF at a Durham veterinary practice are used to having the occasional cat left in a cardboard box on their doorstep.
But yesterday morning Vets 4 Pets at Framwellgate Moor had a surprise package outside their door.
For although, once again, a cat had been abandoned, this time it was left in a new basket complete with a blanket.
The adult tortoishell female appears to have been well looked after and has a friendly nature.
"We are used to finding cardboard boxes with cats inside, but we have never had one left in a proper cat basket,'' said Rachel Smith who works at the practice.
Vets checked the cat to see if she was pregnant, as that could have been the reason she was abandoned. However, an examination showed that she was not having kittens.
"We are all a bit mystified,'' said Rachel.
The cat has now being taken to a sanctuary and hopes are high that staff will find her a home soon.
Anyone who knows anything about the cat or would like more information about her can telephone Vets 4 Pets on 0191-383 0555.
