YOUNGSTERS have been proving they know how to get their point across when it comes to public discussion.
As part of a drive to promote public speaking and listening among children, North Yorkshire County Council organised a debate between some small schools.
Primary schools from Croft, Osmotherley, Great Smeaton, Appleton Wiske, North and South Cowton and East Cowton took along year six children to County Hall, Northallerton, to take part in the debate.
Lively debates centred on banning smoking from public places.
Councillor Chris Metcalfe, executive member for education, said: "Public speaking can be quite nerve-racking no matter what age you are.
"This is an excellent way to encourage children at an early age to learn how to speak in public and to overcome any fears they might have."
Brenda Higgins, headteacher at Croft School, said: "It brings local schools together and helps prepare children for the future."
The competition was judged by an independent panel and won by the children from Croft School, who were presented with a trophy. Great Smeaton School came second and North and South Cowton School third.
