A NEW 20mph speed zone near primary schools has been approved by councillors despite objections by nearby residents.
Linked with the new limit at Ripon are also traffic calming measures.
North Yorkshire county councillor Bernard Bateman said approval of the scheme was a continuation of similar zones around local schools.
He said: "The 20mph limits do work. They have a good record in preventing accidents. Since we established them there have been no accidents recorded near the schools."
The latest schools to benefit from the 20mph limits are Holy Trinity Junior and Infant schools, along with St Wilfrid's RC Primary School.
Councillors backed a report from officials which said the new limits near schools outweighed concerns raised by objectors to the plan in the Church Lane and Trinity Lane area.
Two school crossing patrols already operate in the area.
