HIGHWAYS officials are warning road users they will take action against those who damage minor roads through unusual use.
The network in North Yorkshire includes a lot of minor rural roads, many of which are not built to carry frequent or heavy loads.
When they are exposed to extraordinary levels of use, such as large-scale haulage operations, they can quickly suffer damage.
When that happens, the county council can take action against those responsible to obtain compensation.
Over the years, the authority has been successful in claims for a number of locations.
Councillor Peter Sowray, member for environmental services, said: "We would advise all road users to contact the local highways officer if they are considering transporting large loads or undertaking significant numbers of frequent movements over the county's minor road network.
"Much damage can be prevented through liaison with the highways officers. They can advise on the most appropriate routes to use and establish the cost implications of improvement works which could prevent major damage to the network from extraordinary use."
Officers are available to advise and work with road users to achieve the best solution for all concerned.
