THE musical stars of the film Brassed Off have defended their title in a national brass band contest.
Barnsley-based Grimethorpe Colliery UK Coal was named TUC champions at the Brass in Concert contest at Spennymoor Leisure Centre, County Durham, on Sunday and collected £2,000.
County Durham's representative in the competition Reg Vardy (Ever Ready), from Stanley, finished fourth, winning £500.
Ten bands travelled to the region to take part in the 28th staging of the event.
Second place went to Yorkshire's Sellers International, while South Tyneside's Whitburn Band clinched third place.
