CONSUMER watchdog Energywatch North-East is backing a Government drive to help cut fuel bills.
Against a backdrop of rising gas and electricity costs, the body says switching gas or electricity companies could save up to £100 a year.
Measures aimed at conserving heat in the home could add a further £35 saved on top of that.
Carole Pitkeathley, director of Energywatch North-East, said the message was particularly timely with winter just around the corner.
She said: "Consumers have been hit hard by rocketing fuel bills, but being energy smart can save money.
"The hike in energy bills is forcing vulnerable consumers into fuel debt and poverty this winter.
"Dumping expensive suppliers, being more energy efficient, and changing the method by which you pay to direct debit could all save lots of money."
Yesterday, Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt and Energy Minister Mike O'Brien launched Energy Smart - a campaign aimed at raising awareness of the savings available.
A number of power companies such as npower and Powergen have recently increased the cost of fuel supply.
