The North-East is to host an international bridge tournament - the first time such a tournament has come to the region.

On Saturday, the England versus Scotland Junior International Bridge tournament will be held in the region, at the St George's Bridge Centre in Darlington.

The centre has been chosen as it offers comfortable surroundings and high-quality facilities.

The competition will see five pairs of players aged under 20 playing on each side.

Two members of the Scottish team and one English player are currently studying at Durham University.

Chris Owen, the son of Darlington accountant Clive Owen, will be on the English team.

He is studying at Hull University and was recently selected to play for England against Scotland and in the Channel Trophy against France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The tournament takes place from 1pm to 6pm and there will also be an English Bridge Union simultaneous pairs competition in the morning for schools.

The English Bridge Union is trying to attract more young people to the game, and is encouraging schools to put it on to the curriculum.

The St George's Bridge Centre runs classes for all ages.

The oldest member is 96, while the youngest is 12.
