Gilesgate Evening Townswomen's Guild : THE guild held its monthly meeting on Monday, November 1, in the St John Ambulance Hall. It was the guild's 53rd birthday meeting.
The chairman, Jennie O'Hare, welcomed everyone and the guild anthem was sung. The usual business items, minutes, finances etc were conducted. The date for the Christmas lunch is Thursday, December 16, at Harperley Hall.
There was no speaker, so the 53rd birthday celebrations went ahead. The guild provided beautiful refreshments of sweet and savoury delicacies and the usual tea and coffee. Nancy Urwin, who made and iced the birthday cake, did the honours of cutting the cake and giving the toast. White wine and cake was served to all.
There was a table full of memorabilia, photo albums and photographs of past events, and also the very first guild minutes and committee meeting book from November 1951. Everyone enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and had a really good chatter. A good night was had by all.
The competition, a teddy bear, was won by Margaret Cullingford. The special raffle of a hand-painted picture by Shirley Whiteley, was won by Nancy Urwin. Other winners were Betty Collins, Sandra Mitchelson, Jean Tilly, Lily Robinson and Jill Kennick.
The date of the next meeting is Monday, December 6.
