COMMUTERS angered by the loss of important bus links are being urged to attend a public meeting.

Villagers living in the Stanley area of County Durham, say they have been stranded after bus operator Go North East cut direct services to Newcastle in August.

Other services have also been cancelled due to a shortage of bus drivers.

North Durham MP Kevan Jones has pledged to improve the situation.

Last month, he received a 210-signature petition from residents in Tanfield. Other bus passengers in communities such as Harelaw are also organising a petition.

Paul Matthews, managing director of Go North East, said his company was working hard to resolve reliability problems.

He said some services had been withdrawn to increase the reliability of others.

He has agreed, at the request of Mr Jones, to attend a public meeting in Stanley next week. Also present will be Chris Tunstall, deputy chief executive of Durham County Council.

Mr Jones has written to the Traffic Commissioner, who has promised to investigate the problem.

The meeting is held at Lamplight Arts Centre, Stanley, next Friday at 6.30pm.
