AFTER a year of major construction and building alterations, the University Gallery at Newcastle's University of Northumbria reopens to the public today with exhibitions by the Scottish Colourists, watercolours by Norwegian Frans Widerberg and a sculpture by his son, Nicolaus Widerberg.
Widerberg's monumental bronze work called Pillar Man, commissioned as part of the City's Hidden Rivers scheme, was unveiled yesterday by The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Coun George Douglas.
The event was attended by the artist, Coun David Faulkner, the council's executive member for culture, heritage and sport, and Mr Tarald O Brautaset, the Royal Norwegian Ambassador to Great Britain.
Following the ambassador's outline of Pillar Man's place in the Hidden Rivers scheme, Mr Nicholas Baring CBE, former chairman of the Baring Foundation, cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the gallery's new extension - the Baring Wing.
The event also signifies the gallery's first major programmed exhibition - The People Show, sponsored by Cravens Advertising - which runs from January 21 to February 18. North-East artists of all abilities are being challenged to make art out of people. More details are available on www.thepeopleshow.com
