TWO teenage girls have appeared in court after they were caught shoplifting in Darlington town centre.
The 16-year-old and 13-year-old, from Darlington, both admitted stealing socks worth £3, from Tammy Girl, on November 1.
The older girl told magistrates in Darlington that she stole the socks because she had no money. The court heard she had no previous convictions.
Chairman of the bench Harry Fletcher said: "You have now got a criminal record that will be with you for the rest of your life.
"It is much more interesting to go out and get a job than it is to steal things."
She was given a 12-month referral order.
The 13-year-old also admitted stealing a £4 ring from New Look.
Her hearing was adjourned until Wednesday.
