PEOPLE living in isolated locations across Hambleton are to be consulted on about disposal of rubbish.
Some households are sited along unadopted or unsatisfactory lanes along which council refuse lorries cannot safely travel.
The road can be in a poor condition, be too narrow, have no turning point or be in danger of being damaged by the weight of the truck.
"We want to give people the best service we can, but have to recognise that in some situations it is just not practical or feasible in some of these remote locations," said Councillor John Morley, cabinet member for the environment.
"What people expect from us is as important as the safety of our refuse collectors and the vehicles.
"We have assessed all the unsatisfactory lanes where there are properties and drawn up a list of those that are unsafe to use. Unfortunately, that means there are just over 400 homes that we can no longer collect rubbish from."
A survey form will be sent to affected householders, asking how they want their rubbish to be collected.
"It is vital we get evidence from those affected before we make any decisions on how we can address this issue," said Coun Morley.
The questionnaire will go out early in the New Year.
