A MAN was continuing to help police with their inquiries last night after he was arrested in connection with the death of a woman.

The body of 42-year-old Alison McNally was found by police at a house in the village of Greenside, a small former mining community west of Gateshead.

Police officers went to the house, in Lister Avenue, after an emergency call was received at North-East Ambulance Service control room, at about 2.15pm on Saturday.

A murder inquiry was then launched, which is being overseen by Detective Chief Inspector Martin Harvey, and an incident room was set up at nearby Whickham Police Station.

The arrest of the 46-year-old man followed soon after the investigation was begun, and a Northumbria police force spokesman said he remained in custody last night.
