A VILLAGE hall has reopened after a fundraising effort by the community.
Villagers from Hutton Rudby, near Stokesley, raised more than £400,000 to renovate their hall after it was found to have major structural problems in 1999.
Donations, numerous fundraising events and a loan from the parish council helped to pay for a complete refurbishment of the hall, including a new roof.
"It's been a real village effort," said honorary project manager John Autherson.
"One of the remarkable things has been all the different organisations that have held fundraising events.
"Fifteen different groups have raised money and we have received 600 individual donations."
Villagers initially wanted to knock down the hall and start again, but these plans were abandoned after two unsuccessful bids for Lottery cash.
The hall was reopened on Saturday by actress Wendy Craig, the patron of the appeal.
As a girl, the star of Butterflies and Heartbeat spin-off The Royal used to attend dances in the building.
Although work is now finished, money is still needed to pay off around £40,000 owed to guarantors.
Further fundraising events have been planned.
Trustees are now keen for the community to make full use of the renovated building.
Organisations such as a village youth club have been set up to use the hall, and Mr Autherson believes that the modernised facility would also be suitable for wedding receptions and other family events.
