A PRIMARY school has opened a library with a difference to encourage its pupils to enjoy learning with their families.

Hutton Rudby Primary School's sack library consists of 50 large colourful bags containing a mix of fiction and non-fiction books, games, and story tapes.

Headteacher Amanda Beanland, said: "Our story sack library is at the forefront of innovation in giving children access to a range of authors and illustrators." The unveiling of the new library was attended by story sacks project manager, Neil Griffiths, who created the idea where children take the sacks home, opening links between schools, children and parents. He said: "When I started story sacks ten years ago I had in my head a dream scenario of how it would be, and it was about how communities could be brought together, and to provide wonderful opportunities for children and families.

"Standing here right now I can see that dream come true."

The project was a joint effort by staff and members of the school's parent teacher association.

Sue Grey, the school's story sack co-ordinator, said: "Anything that encourages children and parents to enjoy books together and to develop a lifelong love of reading is a wonderful resource."
