ROBBERS armed with a penknife and a metal pipe raided a shop at the weekend.
Two men in black balaclavas burst into the Co-op store in Cleveland Road, North Shields, North Tyneside, at about 6.25pm on Sunday.
One wielding a penknife set off an alarm to attract the attention of shop staff. Backed by his accomplice, who had a 2ft long metal pipe, he demanded a bag from the cashier and ordered the safe to be opened.
The cashier opened the safe, then escaped out of the back door and alerted a passer-by, who phoned the police.
The robbers managed to evade a member of the public who tried to stop them, and fled on foot along Windermere Road.
They escaped with an undisclosed quantity of cash, but no one was hurt.
The first robber is described as 5ft 11ins. The second is 5ft 6ins and of chubby build. Both were wearing blue jackets.
Police are appealing for witnesses to contact North Shields CID on 0191-214 6555, extension 63145
