SHOPPERS are being urged to help a charity campaign.

After the huge success of a "spectacles amnesty", when more than 2,000 pairs of glasses were donated to charity, Specsavers is raising money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

The opticians, in High Row, Darlington, is asking people to donate old mobile phones, which will secure a £3.50 donation for each handset.

Customers are also asked to continue donating spectacles for the Vision Aid Overseas charity, which distributes them to sight-impaired people in the developing world.

Guide Dogs is the official charity of Specsavers, which is championing a campaign to raise more than £100,000 to help train 20 puppies.

Debbie Wheeler, local representative for the charity, said: "It's an easy way to raise money for charity and it won't cost you a penny."
