A TAXI driver lost six teeth in a shocking attack when two customers turned on him and stole his takings.

Pervaiz Deen picked up two men outside the Aruba Bar, in Middlesbrough, who asked to go to Thornaby.

During the journey, the men changed their destination and asked to be dropped off at Richardson Road, close to Thornaby Green at about 1am on Saturday.

When the car stopped, one of the men grabbed Mr Deen and demanded his takings.

When he tried to drive off, the assailants dragged him from his cab and kicked and punched him.

They took his money bag and keys from the car's ignition, before running away, leaving Mr Deen with two front teeth missing and covered in blood.

He suffered bruising to most of his body and face.

The cabbie, who works for Cleveland Taxis, was also left with other loose teeth, four of which have since had to be removed.

Zafar Quyoom, owner of Cleveland Taxis, said he was disgusted by the attack.

"It was totally unprovoked - by men wanting his money.

"I have seen Pervaiz since and he is a mess. He was badly beaten and left shaken.

"Taxi drivers provide a vital service to the community and are in a vulnerable position to criminals like this.

"Pervaiz hasn't been back to work and I wonder if he ever will get back in a cab. His life is more important."

It is the second time Mr Deen has been attacked. Last September in North Ormesby, a customer used glass to cut him.

He said: "You are not safe anywhere now. People keep asking me why I don't give up, but I need this job.

"It was a frightening experience and they only got away with about £30 to £40. I am 54 and only a small fellow, so I was no match for them."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Constable John Tappa on (01642) 302236.
