A YOUNGSTER has won £100 of designer clothes after taking part in a competition aimed at spotting counterfeit goods.

Luke Overton, aged ten, from Billingham, Teesside, won the Spot the Fake competition, at Billingham Show earlier this year, after correctly noting that all the clothing on display was counterfeit.

He also impressed judges with his slogan for the tiebreaker question - "Don't buy fakes because you'll only be a faker yourself".

Luke will be able to spend the £100 worth of vouchers at the Psyche Store, in Middlesbrough.

Steve Cochrane, managing director of Psyche, said: "I feel it is important that the issue of counterfeiting is raised with youngsters, particularly because of the harm it does to the local economy and the adverse effect it has on reputable traders."

Two other winners, in a competition to mark 30 years of trading standards consumer advice, have also been chosen after correctly answering questions relating to life in 1974, in comparison with today.

Carolyn Evans, from Billingham, and Carol Russell, from Stockton, won a DVD player and a retro game system.

All three will be presented with their prizes this evening, at the Consumer Advice Centre, Stockton.

Councillor Martyn Ingram, cabinet member for housing and community safety, said: "It is good to know that our younger consumers are alert to fakes and feel that they should not support sellers of counterfeit goods."
