A CHARITY shop that was gutted by fire earlier this year will reopen in January.
Flames tore through the National Kidney Research Fund's charity shop in Birtley, near Chester-le-Street, in September.
The fire, which was sparked by an electrical fault, caused damage estimated at £30,000. The heat was so great that the shop window exploded, showering the street with glass.
Shop staff have spent two months refurbishing the outlet, in Harraton Terrace, and plan to open the doors again on Friday, January 7.
Shop manager Norma Dunn said: "I am so pleased that the shop is reopening.
"The damage caused by the fire was devastating to see, but we are looking at the positive side, and are confident that the refit will encourage more shoppers than ever.
"I hope that people will come along and have a look at what we have to offer."
She said residents had already started donating goods to help the store get back on its feet, but more was needed.
Anyone who can help is asked to contact the shop on 0191-492 1558.
