thieves yesterday made off with Christmas presents intended for needy people.
Two teenage boys took carrier bags packed with gifts, from beneath a Christmas tree in the Alpha Radio studios, in Woodland Road, Darlington.
The presents had been donated by residents, to be distributed as part of the annual Giving Tree Appeal, which is officially launched today.
Alpha's afternoon presenter, Shaun Harrington, said: "They just came in and helped themselves to a couple of carrier bags full of presents."
"I mentioned it on air and said they were utter scumbags, and that has provoked quite a response from people.
"People have been ringing in and saying they will donate extra presents, which is great."
The appeal is organised by Darlington Borough Council's social services department, with support from local businesses and organisations.
A record 2,000 people benefited last year and more companies than ever before were involved.
* Details of this year's appeal and how to contribute will feature in tomorrow's Northern Echo.
