THE region is home to Britain's top female bodybuilder after Shildon woman Wendy McCready landed the British Championship title.
The 27-year-old won her heavyweight class in the contest held in Nottingham and then went on to take the overall prize.
As winner of the championship, Miss McCready can turn professional and is looking forward to competing on the International circuit.
She said: "I'll have to compete at the professional level now, which means travelling to America, and can be invited to do guest spots at other competitions and shows.
"It was absolutely brilliant to be named champion and it took a while to sink in.
"Now I'm looking forward to new challenges, which is what I enjoy, and ultimately hope to reach Miss Olympia - the world body-building championships."
Reaching top level in the sport has required determination and discipline from Miss McCready, who started training seven years ago as a progression of karate and gym training.
She said: "It is a lifestyle now, I have to stick to my diet and training and what I do in rest-time is just as important to let my muscle develop.
"I do have to be disciplined but everyone at my gym, Grant's Gym in St Helen Auckland, my training partner, Angie Moore, and friends and family are a big help."
