SIX pieces of art will be installed in the Stanley area to mark out the communities involved in a self improvement project.

The Stanley Green Corridor Neighbourhood Partnership has commissioned six entrance features to act as gateways to the corridor.

The partnership was set up by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister to improve the quality of life for residents in the old district council wards of Craghead, South Stanley and South Moor.

The pieces are being funded by the Green Corridor Partnership and a grant from the European Regional Development Fund, which is administered by environmental group Groundwork West Durham.

Kath Ivens, senior project officer for Groundwork, said: "The idea is they will be gateway sites into the Green Corridor.

"They will all be similar to link together and have been designed to go with artistic sites that have already been installed in the corridor."

Two of the features are due to be erected in Shield Row Lane, New Kyo, at its junction with the A693 and next to the electricity sub-station.

Others will go south of Merina House in Front Street, Old South Moor; Durham Road, South Stanley; outside Boundary House, in Craghead, and to the north of St Thomas' Church, Lowery Lane, Craghead.

The first are due to be erected in the new year.
