A YOUNG musician is becoming a big noise in the orchestral world.

Eleven-year-old Graham Thorpe has earned a call-up to the National Children's Orchestra for his prowess on the trombone.

He first learned to play the piano then two years ago he became a convert to the trombone.

Graham, of Bow School, Durham, is a member of the school band and has become popular with parents for his party piece solo contributions to concerts.

The school's director of music, Helen Ketteridge, put the youngster forward for his audition with the national orchestra.

She was impressed with Graham's musical ability from arriving at the school, in September last year.

She said: "He was obviously very proficient on the piano and then he turned to the trombone and has obviously proved exceptional.

"While he is particularly strong with the classics, the school band plays more of a mix and he can turn his hand to other musical styles.

"The parents always look forward to school concerts, because he has quite a sense of humour and likes to amuse the audence."

Ms Ketteridge believes Graham has what it takes to make a career in music.

She said: "He's sensibly kept up his piano skills which means he will qualify for possible scholarships when he leaves here in two years.

"I would be very surprised if he didn't go into music when he's older because he's outstanding at the moment."
