THE second phase of a multi-million-pound plan to transform Darlington's South Park has begun.
The £3.9m scheme, which received backing from the Heritage Lottery Fund, aims to restore the park to its former glory.
The first part of the project saw the lake drained and surveys carried out on trees and wildlife in the area.
Darlington Borough Council announced yesterday that the second phase had begun, which will include the installation of a sensory garden with a water feature. Plants will be placed at a height which will allow them to be enjoyed by wheelchair users.
The restoration of the park's bandstand, built in 1892, has also been eagerly anticipated. It has been sent to Glasgow, where it originated, for the refurbishment work to be carried out by Heritage Engineering.
About 20 layers of paint, accumulated over 100 years, have been removed to discover its original colour scheme.
An education building, offering a venue to schools and community groups, is being constructed.
The latest work will also include drainage, improved caf facilities, a restored rose garden and rockeries, public toilets and improved facilities for bowling green users.
Meanwhile, as part of the Restorative Justice initiative in the North-East, prisoners could be put to work to produce items for the park.
The programme is supported by the council and the County Durham Environmental Trust.
Lee Vasey, the council's cabinet member for leisure, said: "Phase two of the South Park restoration will see a number of new and exciting facilities introduced in the park for the enjoyment of all users."
The park is open throughout work, which will be complete by autumn next year.
* Guided walks centred around the restoration programme take place today, and on Friday, January 7. To take part in either walk people are asked to meet at 2pm at the Parkside entrance.
